The last few weeks have been quite a whirlwind. I finished grad school (MS in Digital Media from Georgia Tech), packed everything I could fit into my car, and drove cross-country–the only minor hiccup being a speeding ticket for going 10 (10!) over in Oklahoma. The last week or so in Atlanta and the first week or so here were marked by a flurry of phone and in-person interviews. In the end, I got three offers (not counting the three that I broke off before it got to the offer stage). It’s nice to be wanted, but man can it be taxing talking to so many people at once. After examining my options, I’m now a “Web Developer” at a small (I’ll be employee #2) stealth startup in Los Altos–it should be loads of fun. I’ve been staying with my girlfriend while doing the last round of interviews and the apartment hunt, and I put a deposit down earlier today. At the end of the month, one of my buddies from undergrad (Go Dawgs!) will be moving out to live with me in Mountain View.
That’s the short version of me up until now (or maybe only the last two weeks of me), but it’s hardly a mission statement. Why a blog? Well, I used to keep one at least semi-regularly before grad-school spelled the end of free time. I’m a big fan of stringing words together, and while my new job will be rewarding in other ways (like padding my bank account, for instance), the type of writing involved is a bit more…procedural. The old MySpace blog was a hodgepodge of personal thoughts and brain-dump, though one of my friends told me once that it was basically a food blog.
(Hopefully) regular topics on this blog will include a mish-mash of my hobbies and interests:
- Anecdotes on the College -> Real World transition
- Original game designs, either rapid prototypes or “What Ifs”
- Media reviews (movies, books, games… but I’ll leave music out of it)
- Reflections on the great outdoors through kayaking, surfing, hiking, & rock climbing
- Machinima and Digital Puppetry – both others and my own projects (hopefully I’ll have some of those)
- Adventures in the kitchen (and restaurants, for that matter).
- And last… whatever else I feel like ranting and raving about–be it Fark stories or new gadgetry or how bad traffic was today.
As you can probably surmise, my interests are all over the board. The most recurring theme that ties everything together is that there’s too much stuff I want to get done and not enough hours in the week to do it all (did I mention I’ve got a girlfriend, too?). Time will tell whether or not I actually have time to maintain a blog on top of all that, but it’s good brain exercise.
